Crimson, Catamounts Skate to 2-2 Stalemate

Feb. 26, 2005

The Harvard men's hockey team closed the 2004-05 regular season with a 2-2 tie at Vermont on Saturday evening. With the one point - coupled with a loss by Colgate - the Crimson finishes in second place in the ECACHL with a 18-8-3 mark, 15-5-2 in conference play.

Harvard jumped on the board first, taking advantage of its first power play opportunity. Noah Welch (Brighton, MA) had the puck out at the point and saw an open Charlie Johnson (Calgary, ALB) alone in the right circle, and Welch's pass was one-timed by the junior centerman for his seventh goal of the season. Vermont answered with a power play tally of its own late in the frame, when Torrey Mitchell worked the puck along the half-wall before moving it out to Kenny Macaulay at the point. Macaulay's offering was tipped in front by Scott Mifsud over the shoulder of Grumet-Morris for his 19th goal of the season.

The Crimson took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission, potting the only goal of the frame. Dylan Reese started the play from the blueline on the power play, putting a shot on net. Vermont goalie Joe Fallon made the initial save, but Brendan Bernakevitch (Regina, SASK) and Dan Murphy (North Andover, MA) were there at the goalmouth, and kept chipping at the puck until it made its way past the goalie.

Vermont tied the score just a minute into the final frame. With Johnson in the box on a call whistled at the end of the second period, Mifsud ripped a shot past Grumet-Morris off a nice pass from Mitchell. As time wore down in the period, both teams were aggressive in their approach, with Vermont having two great chances right before the final buzzer sounded. Both Jeff Corey and Mifsud had chances, but Mifsud's offering was stopped right at the buzzer to send the game into the extra frame. Neither team mustered a shot in the overtime, and the gasme ended in a stalemate. Grumet-Morris made 25 saves, while Fallon had 22.

Harvard has a week off during the first round of the ECAC playoffs, and returns to action at the Bright Hockey Center on March 11 in the quarterfinal round.
