NEW YORK - CSTV: College Sports Television (www.cstv.com), the first 24-hour college sports network, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the United States hockey team's shocking gold medal performance at the 1980 Winter Olympics with special presentations of its critically acclaimed documentary, Coach: Herb Brooks.
CSTV will air Coach: Herb Brooks on Tuesday, February 22 (10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT), 25 years to the day from when the United States shocked the world with a victory over the Soviet Union in the Olympic Games semifinals. CSTV will also televise Coach on Thursday, February 24 (9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT), 25 years to the day of the United States' victory over Finland in the gold medal game that capped an improbable run in Lake Placid, N.Y.
In addition, this Friday, February 18, much of CSTV's The 1 College Sports Show will be devoted to the "Miracle on Ice" and college hockey. This CSTV studio show will feature an exclusive interview from the CSTV Fieldhouse with 1980 United States Olympic team member Dave Silk and Soviet Union hockey legend Alexei Kasatonov, who went head-to-head in the 1980 Olympic semifinal game. Friday's The 1 College Sports Show will also include an essay on the 1980 U.S. team by CSTV Friday Night Hockey analyst and NHL announcing legend Mike Emrick, along with interviews with 1980 U.S. team member Mark Johnson and long-time NHL scout and coach E.J. McGuire. CSTV's team of Greg Amsinger, Michelle Beadle and Adam Zucker will anchor the action from the CSTV Fieldhouse with CSTV college hockey analysts Dave Starman and Adam Wodon.
Mike Eruzione, who captained the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" team, hosts Coach, which features interviews with 1980 teammates Jim Craig, John Harrington, Rob McClanahan, "Buzz" Schneider and David Silk. Coach also includes highlights from the 1980 Winter Olympics hockey competition and Brooks' college and professional coaching tenures.
Brooks, the head coach of the 1980 U.S. hockey team, died in an automobile accident in August of 2003. He is enshrined in both the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame.
Brooks was a three-year letter winner at Minnesota before playing for the United States in the 1964 and 1968 Olympics. He later coached the University of Minnesota squad to three NCAA Division I national championships (1974, 1976, 1979). In addition to his team's 1980 gold medal-winning performance, Brooks coached the United States to a silver medal in the 2002 Olympics and coached Team France in the 1998 Olympics. Brooks also coached the New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.
CSTV's original Coach series delivers the intimate perspective on college sports' legendary coaches as told by the former student-athletes who were their star pupils. The Brooks-coached 1980 United States team, comprised entirely of college players, defeated a heavily favored Soviet Union team in the Winter Olympics semifinals and subsequently defeated Finland for the gold medal two days later, on February 24. Sports Illustrated later proclaimed the monumental upset of the Soviet Union the "Greatest Sports Moment of the Century."
Eruzione, the former Boston University star, not only captained the 1980 Olympic team, but also scored the game-winning goal in the 4-3 semifinal victory over the Soviet Union. Eruzione scored three goals and had five assists during the 1980 Olympic Games. He is currently an analyst for CSTV's Friday Night Hockey game-of-the-week series. Friday Night Hockey is the only nationally televised hockey series, and is the cornerstone of CSTV's unsurpassed on-air and online coverage of college hockey.
