The members of the Lake Superior State hockey team have always prided themselves on being a very close-knit group. Sophomore forwards Matt Restoule, Derek R. Smith, and Trent Campbell became even closer after a 28-hour road trip they took at the close of their freshman year at LSSU.

The road trip took the trio from Michigan through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and north to Saskatchewan. Their final destination was Beauval, Sask., Campbell's 900-resident hometown.

After overnight stops in Regina and Saskatoon, Sask., the teammates arrived at their destination. Campbell showed Smith and Restoule around Beauval, teaching them about his native heritage.

"I am a little over half native," said Campbell, who is a member of the English River First Nation. "My heritage is really important to me.

"One of the days we were at my house, we went up to home reserve, Patuanak."

Campbell's father, Isidore, took Smith and Restoule on a tour of the reserve and the medical clinic. Afterwards, the teammates went to Campbell's grandmother's house for a dinner of caribou and bannock, a type of bread.

The teammates also visited the school where Campbell's mother, Ornella, is a counselor. At the school, which houses grades 1-12, Campbell, Smith and Restoule spoke with students about their experiences as collegiate student-athletes.

"It was a great experience to come back and get to talk to all of the students," Campbell said. "It was great for the students to see what can happen if they work hard and to see the kinds of bonds you can form with your teammates."

Restoule, who also has aboriginal roots, was very familiar with Campbell's heritage and culture, while Smith learned a lot about his roommate.

"I really liked seeing a new culture and learning about Campbell's culture," Smith said. "We had a great time. Hopefully we can make it a yearly tradition."

Campbell also hopes that the road trip will be a recurring experience.

"I enjoyed the trip a lot," Campbell said. "It was nice for me to have my teammates see where I am from and my culture. It was also a great way to end our freshman year."
