UC Irvine in 5th Place After First Day of Topy Cup

TANAGURA, Japan --- UC Irvine is in fifth place after the first day of competition in the 26th annual Topy Cup at Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan.

The Anteaters and Senshu University are tied for fifth with 18-hole scores of 296. Three-time defending champion Tohoku Fukushi University and Lamar University are tied for first at 285, Nihon University is third at 290 and New Mexico is fourth at 292 in the 10-team field.

Shinpei Iijima of Meiji University and Lamar's Leroux Ferreira are the individual leaders after shooting 3-under rounds of 69.

UCI freshman Michael Im is in 11th place after an even-par 72. Senior Sean Shahi and junior John Chin are tied for 17th place at 73, sophomore Bryan Harris is 42nd at 78 and senior Cean Hayashi Geronimo is 51st at 81.

The tournament, which features four American schools and six Japanese universities, continues with 18 holes each on Wednesday and Thursday.
