Seniors Lead Lobos at Topy Cup

The University of New Mexico men's golf team teed off the 2008-09 season at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan, today. The Lobos are currently in fourth place in the 10-team event with a first round total of 4-over 290. UNM is seven strokes off the pace set by Tohoku Fukishi University (285, -3) at the 7,127-yard, par-72 Tanagura Country Club.

The Lobos were led by senior Steve Saunders' 2-under 70 today. Saunders opened his round with a bogey on the 420-yeard par-4 first hole, but he carded birdies on nine, 11 and 18 to finish in red numbers. He is currently tied for third in the individual standings. Lamar's Leroux Ferreira and Meiji University's Shinpei Lijima are tied for the individual lead at 3-under (69).

Senior Jon Sauer also had a solid round for the Lobos today. He shot a 1-under 70 with two birdies and a bogey in his first round of the year. He is currently tied for 6th overall. Freshman James Erkenbeck had a solid debut with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 25th. He went out in 39 with four bogeys in his first nine holes. However, he rebounded with an inward 35 that included two birdies and only one bogey.

Junior Nick Geyer shot a 5-over 77 in his first action in 16 months after redshirting last season. Fellow junior Brandon Putnam shot a 6-over 78 in his opening round. Geyer is tied for 38th while Putnam is in 42nd place in the 60-player field.

The Lobos continue play at the Topy Cup tomorrow with 18 holes in the second round. The 54-hole event concludes on Thursday. The Lobos host the annual William H. Tucker at the UNM Championship Course on Sept. 26-27.
