Lamar Opens Topy Cup With Solid 285; Tied For First With TFU

Cards hold seven shot lead over closest US team, New Mexico

TANAGURA, Japan - Behind senior Leroux Ferreira's three-under-par 69, the Lamar men's golf team is tied for first at three-under 285 after the first round of the Topy Cup at the Tanagura Country Club.

Ferreira, who is tied for the individual lead with Shinpei Iijima of Meiji University, recorded an eagle and four birdies, but cost himself a few shots with a double bogey and bogey as well.

Redshirt junior Wynand Snymon carded a one-under 71 to stand in a tie for sixth in his first competition since his sophomore year at Midland College. He posted four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey on the day. Junior Hugues Joannes is tied for 11th overall after he shot an even-par 72 on the 7,127-yard layout.

Senior Justin Harding's 73 was the fourth score to count for the Cardinals. He is tied for 17th place. Redshirt freshman Jake Fuljenz is in 54th after an 82.

Lamar used the longer holes to its advantage, playing the par 5s at six-under.

The Cardinals are tied for first with Tohoku Fukushi University, who has won the last three Topy Cups. Nihon University is in third place at 290, followed by New Mexico in fourth at 292 and Senshu University and UC Irvine in a tie for fifth at 296. The other American team - 13th-ranked Charlotte - is in ninth at 298.

The second round will be played on Tuesday with the final 18 holes on Wednesday. Tanagura is 14 hours ahead of the US Central Time Zone.
