Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Southern Miss men's golf team shot a three-under 285 to open the Aldila Intercollegiate in seventh place. Rain suspended the start of Round Two. The season-opening tournament is being co-hosted by UT-Chattanooga and Middle Tennessee State and is being played at the Council Fire Golf Club.
The Golden Eagles had three golfers shoot rounds of even par of less. Redshirt junior Paul Apyan led Southern Miss with a four-under par 68 to sit in a tie for fourth-place. Junior Wes Carter is tied for 18th-place after firing a two-under 70. Senior Rocky Cleland shot an even-par 70 to tie for 33rd, while redshirt freshman Freddie Janneck and sophomore Derek Plucienski each shot three-over 75's to sit in 61st-place.
Southeastern Louisiana's Matthew Carvell shot a 12-under 60 to take the lead after one round. Jacksonville State's Gonzalo Berlin and Ricky Stout of Western Carolina sit in second-place with three-under 67's.
Jacksonville State leads the team scoring with an 11-under 277. Co-host UT-Chattanooga (278) is one shot back in second-place. Augusta State is in third-place after shooting a nine-under 279. In fourth-place sits Wichita State with 280 strokes. Western Carolina sits in fifth with a five-under 283. North Florida (284) is in sixth, followed by Southern Miss' three-under 285. Furman and Southeastern Louisiana are tied for eighth with an even par 288 and Oklahoma is in tenth with 289 strokes.
Co-host Middle Tennessee State is in 11th-place with 290 strokes, followed by Mercer (291), South Florida (292), Florida Gulf Coast (293), Louisiana Tech (295) and Francis Marion (298).
Southern Miss returns to play tomorrow with the conclusion of the final two rounds.
