Gielow advances at U.S. Amateur with Match Play Victory

Wake Forest sophomore golfer Brendan Gielow has advanced to the round of 32 at the 107th United State Amateur Golf Championship being played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Gielow was 59th following stroke play with a seven-over 147. The top 64 golfers then go head to head in match play and Gielow opened with a 3-and-2 win over David Merkow of Northwestern University, the 2006 Big 10 Player of the Year.
Gielow will now face Colt Knost of SMU in the next round. That match is scheduled to tee-off at noon Eastern on Thursday, August 23.
Deacon golfer Webb Simpson finished 25th in stroke play with a four-over 144. Simpson dropped his first match play event, falling 4-and-3 to Michael Thompson of Alabama.
