Two-time defending champion falls, 7 and 5, in the 36-hole final match

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brad Valois finished second at the 103rd Rhode Island Amateur Championship this afternoon at Agawam Hunt C.C.

Valois, the two-time defending champion in the event, fell to David McAndrew, 7 and 5, in the 36-hole final match of the tournament.

The first 18 holes on Friday morning were tightly contested. With the match all square after 6 holes, Valois registered back-to-back birdies to go 2 up heading into the 9th hole. McAndrew won the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes, putting him 1 up. After a tie on 14, Valois pulled even again on 15. After ties on 16 and 17, McAndrew birdied the 18th hole, going 1 up into the afternoon session.

In the afternoon session, McAndrew registered birdie-eagle-birdie on the first three holes, to make it 4 up. Valois carded nine pars and a birdie over the final 13 holes.
