STEVINSON, Calif. -- After struggling in the opening round, Gonzaga University's men's golf team battled back to set a tournament record and shoot a second-round 294 Monday for 11th place after the first day of the 10th annual CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational Monday.
The Bulldogs, who fired a 320 for the first round of the day as only two players broke 80, set the tournament record for most improvement from the first round to the second round in the history of the tournament with their 26-stroke improvement.
Gonzaga was led by Reyn Tanaka, who shot a second-round 70 over the 7,144-yard, par-72 Stevinson Golf Club layout to tie for 11th with a 148 heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes of the 54-hole event.
Fellow West Coast Conference foe and 43rd-ranked Saint Mary's College holds the team lead at 581 for a 2-stroke lead over New Mexico State University after 36 holes. Gonzaga is at 614. Host University of Colorado, ranked 68th, is third at 589.
Michael McRae and Chadd Cocco of Saint Mary's share the individual lead at 141 for a 1-stroke lead over Matt Edwards of NMSU>
Stevinson has never been easy for this tournament, presenting one of the toughest yet fairest challenges annually in college golf. Of the 710 players in the previous nine tournaments, only 39 bettered par with another 11 matching it through 54 holes. That trend is continuing, with just three players under par and two others equaling it through Monday's 36 holes.
