Norman, OK (U-WIRE) -- The first three quarters weren't pretty, but the fourth quarter gave OU something to build on going into this week's game against Baylor.
Freshman quarterback Rhett Bomar threw for 100 yards in the fourth quarter as OU beat Kansas 19-3 Saturday at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium. He finished the game with 206 passing yards and a touchdown.
The win evened the Sooners' record at 3-3. They need three wins in their last five games to be bowl eligible.
"We don't want to have any more losses on our schedule," Bomar said. "We want to win out. This was a big game to get our attitude back after last week. It was a great feeling in the locker room to get a win, and we want to continue to improve from here on out."
Bomar completed five of eight passes in the fourth quarter. Three of his fourth-quarter completions came on third down, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Malcolm Kelly.
Kelly's was the first touchdown grab by an OU wide receiver this season.
"It was a great throw," offensive coordinator Chuck Long said. "Great not only for our offense and Rhett at the time, it was great for Malcolm. Malcolm is going to be a great player before he's done here, and just one reception like that for a touchdown can do wonders for your confidence."
The strong fourth quarter saved what could have been a disastrous day for the OU offense.
The Sooners had 167 total yards through three quarters. Bomar was 11-for-23 passing with 106 yards and two interceptions. OU running backs combined for 57 yards on 33 carries, and the Sooners converted three of their first 14 third-down opportunities.
The first three quarters saw Bomar get hit on third down and fumble the ball, only to have it recovered by senior offensive lineman Chris Bush.
A pitch to sophomore running back Adrian Peterson was fumbled and recovered by Kansas. What looked like a completion to junior quarterback-turned-wide receiver Paul Thompson was ripped away by Kansas cornerback Charles Gordon.

The errors piled up as the OU defense gave the Sooners opportunities to put the Jayhawks away.
"He wasn't setting his feet in the first half at times," Long said of Bomar. "We had some breakdowns as well, he was getting hit a little bit. He really settled down in the second half. He threw some clutch throws."
In the fourth quarter, the offense responded. The Sooners had 139 total yards of offense and converted three of five third downs.
"We switched it up on them," Bomar said. "We ran more out of passing formations and passed more out of running formations. Just so they couldn't key on one thing. It worked well for us."
Bomar said it was important for the offense to finish strong against Kansas. It provided momentum going into the Baylor game.
Whether the OU offense builds upon its fourth quarter performance or reverts back to the way it looked in the first three quarters will be seen when the team takes the field against the Bears.
"We're scrapping every week," Long said. "That's just where we are right now offensively, and whatever it takes to win the football game is what we're going to do."
