New York, NY (U-WIRE) -- Michael Quarshie, CC '05, has been signed to the practice squad of the Oakland Raiders, NFL Europe announced last week. Quarshie, a native of Helsinki, Finland, spent the last six weeks playing defensive tackle for the NFL Europe's Frankfurt Galaxy, where his 11 tackles and one sack turned some heads. Through the NFL's International Development Practice Squad program, Quarshie is one of eight NFL Europe players who will be signed to NFL practice squad rosters for the 2005 season. The program dictates that Quarshie cannot be cut from the team during the season and cannot be moved to the active roster.

At Columbia, Quarshie was a team captain during his senior season in 2004. He recorded 59 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and his 16 tackles for a loss led the Ivy League. He earned All-League honors in 2003 and 2004, and was named to the National Football Foundation/College Hall of Fame's Scholar Athlete team in 2004.

Four players were selected in the inaugural year of the NFL's International Development program in 2004. Two of those players returned for another year on the practice squad, and the other two players were signed to the roster of their respective teams.

"We are confident that this group of players will more than match up to the achievements of last year's group," said Tony Allen, Director of Internaional Football and Player Development for NFL Europe, on the NFL Europe League website. "Their experience will drive our international player programs to a higher level."
