Louisville CB Smart Out of Orange Bowl With Broken Leg

Dec. 28, 2006

MIAMI (AP) - Louisville cornerback Gavin Smart broke his right leg during practice on Thursday and will not play in the Orange Bowl next week.

Smart broke the fibula in his right leg about midway through No. 5 Louisville's two-hour practice at Barry University.

He started 10 games this season and has 28 tackles, eight pass breakups and three interceptions. Smart also made one of the key plays in Louisville's season when he knocked down a last-second pass in the end zone to preserve the Cardinals' 23-17 win over Cincinnati on Oct. 14.

Rod Council will likely start in Smart's place against No. 15 Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl.
