Dec. 16, 2007
Sophomore quarterback Mitch Mustain, who is sitting out the 2007 season after transferring from Arkansas, threw 3 touchdown passes to highlight USC's intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday (Dec. 16) as the No. 6 Trojans continued preparations for their upcoming New Year's Day Rose Bowl game against No. 13 Illinois.
Mustain, who completed 10-of-16 passes for 162 yards, threw a 22-yard TD to redshirt freshman tight end Cooper Stephenson, a 17-yard score to redshirt frosh wide receiver Sean Calcagnie and an 11-yard game-ending touchdown to soph wide receiver Damian Williams, another Arkansas transfer who must sit out this season.
Williams had 5 receptions for 58 yards in the 84-play scrimmage that gave many of USC's backup players an opportunity to showcase their abilities.
Freshman tailback Marc Tyler ran for 78 yards on 7 carries, including a 6-yard TD. Senior tailback Hershel Dennis scored on a 7-yard run. Sophomore tailback Allen Bradford had 41 yards on 7 carries along with 3 receptions for 5 yards.
Freshman wide receiver Ronald Johnson returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score.
Junior placekicker David Buehler nailed a 50-yard field goal.
Freshman linebacker Malcolm Smith led the Trojan defense with 4 tackles, while soph cornerback Vincent Joseph had a sack and 2 pass deflections.
"We wanted to get reps for players who'll be battling for playing time in the future," said USC head coach Pete Carroll. "This was one of our better scrimmages in terms of guys being into it. We saw a lot of things out there. The hitting was crisp and hard. It was our final full-speed scrimmage before the Rose Bowl."
The Trojans return to the practice field late next week for sessions on Dec. 20, 21 and 22 at the Home Depot Center, then come back after Christmas for game-week preparations on campus.
