Bryan Smith named to 2007 Walter Camp all-America football team
It's his second straight year to be named to squad
Dec. 7, 2007
McNeese State defensive end Bryan Smith has been named to the 2007 Walter Camp Football Foundation all-American team.
This is the second straight year for the Cowboy senior to be named to the team.
The team was selected by head coaches and sports information directors of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and certified by UHY Advisors, a New Haven based accounting firm.
Quarterback Ricky Santos of New Hampshire headlines the team as a three-time pick.
The defensive team includes 11 players who are candidates for the Buck Buchanan defensive player of the year award, including McNeese's Smith.
This past season Smith was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year after being among the nation's top ranked players in quarterback sacks (10.5) and tackles for a loss (22.5).
Players from 10 different conferences and 22 total institutions are represented on the Walter Camp team.
Smith is one of three players from the Southland Conference named to the team. The others are defensive back Ladarius Webb of Nicholls State and punter Chris MacDonald of Texas State.
Walter Camp, "the father of American Football", first selected an all-America team in 1989. Camp, a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side.
The Walter Camp foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideas of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting all-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship subdivisions.
