FAU Rusty Smith and Frantz Joseph Named Sun Belt Players of The Week

Offensive and Defensive Starters Played Key Role in Win Over Troy

Dec. 3, 2007

Florida Atlantic University quarterback Rusty Smith and linebacker Frantz Joseph were named Sun Belt Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their role in FAU's landmark 38-32 win over Troy on Saturday.

Smith completed 23 of 34 passes for 291 yards and two touchdown passes. His second half touchdown passes to Jason Harmon and Cortez Gent punctuated a stretch where the Owls scored 28 points in 12 minutes. This is the second week in a row that Smith has taken Player of the Week honors, and the fourth time this season.

Joseph led FAU on defense with 11 tackles, seven of them solo. He also kept alive the Owls' streak of consecutive games with at least one interception, upping that mark to 20 with a second quarter pick of an Omar Haugabook pass. Joseph was part of a defense that held the Trojans to just nine first half points.

FAU's game against Troy will re-air on CSS, a Comcast Cable affiliate (channel 32 in the Palm Beach market, channel 63 in the Miami/Dade market and Channel 41 in the Broward market) on Tuesday, December 4 at 2 p.m. The FAU Owls will face the Memphis Tigers in the New Orleans Bowl on Friday, December 21 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the FAU ticket office by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
