Virginia Will Play Texas Tech In Gator Bowl

Cavs and Red Raiders to play in Jacksonville

Dec. 2, 2007

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Virginia has accepted its second invitation to the Gator Bowl, where the Cavaliers will meet Texas Tech and offensive mastermind Mike Leach.

The nationally televised game will take place at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., on New Year's Day.

The No. 21 Cavaliers (9-3) lost to Oklahoma 48-14 in the 1991 Gator Bowl. This will be Virginia's fifth bowl appearance under coach Al Groh and 17th overall.

"The offer of a bid to participate in the 2008 Konica Minolta Gator Bowl is exciting and is the type acknowledgment that comes from a successful regular season," said Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage.

Texas Tech finished 8-4 this season.

The bowl invitation crowns a roller coaster season that saw the Cavaliers through dizzying highs and lows.

After being handed a humbling 23-3 loss at the hands of Wyoming, the Cavaliers went on to win seven straight games. They fell just short of winning the league's Coastal Division title, falling to Virginia Tech to close the regular season.
