ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia and Georgia Tech will renew their football rivalry on Saturday, and according to those participating in a poll at www.georgiadogs.com, two previous games rank among the best ever played at Sanford Stadium.
The 1984 Georgia-Clemson game received nearly 800 votes as the top game ever played at Sanford Stadium, according to those responding to the web site's poll. The Bulldogs won that game 26-23 on Kevin Butler's 60-yard field goal.
The second- and third-highest games on the poll involved the Bulldogs and the Yellow Jackets. Coming in at No. 2 in the poll was the 2002 game in which Georgia posted a 51-7 decision against its in-state rival. The No. 3 choice was the 1978 contest in which Georgia rallied from a 20-0 deficit to claim a 29-28 victory.
The fourth-rated game was the 1980 contest in which the Bulldogs beat South Carolina 13-10. That game pitted future Heisman Trophy winners Herschel Walker and George Rogers against each other. At No. 5 was the 1981 game against Auburn that the Bulldogs won 24-13 to claim the SEC title.
The rest of the top 10 included Georgia's 1991 upset of Clemson, the 1965 flea-flicker game against Alabama, the 1929 stadium dedication game against Yale, the 1980 game against Vanderbilt as Walker rushed for 283 yards and the 1959 game against Auburn to clinch the SEC crown.
Nearly 3,900 votes were cast in the poll.
