The Citadel Sets Record For Points In 70-28 Win Over VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) - Tory Cooper rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns to lead The Citadel to a 70-28 win over VMI on Saturday.

Freshman Bart Blanchard threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score for The Citadel (7-4), which scored 70 points for the second time this season. The Bulldogs beat Webber International 76-0 on Sept. 8 to break a 14-year-old school record for points scored.

It marked the second straight week that VMI (2-9) gave up that many points. The Keydets lost to Liberty 73-34 on Nov. 10.

Cooper had first-half TD runs of 2, 8 and 50 yards as The Citadel raced to a 42-7 lead.

Blanchard, who had a 30-yard TD run in the first quarter, had 62 yards on eight carries. He completed 12-of-18 passes for 221 yards.

Tim Higgins had TD catches of 10 and 9 yards from Blanchard. Andre Roberts, who caught seven passes for 128 yards, had a 30-yard scoring grab.

The Citadel compiled 509 total yards.

Zach Collins had TD runs of 59 and 4 yards, Tim Maypray returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score and Joey Robinson scored on a 35-yard run for VMI.

VMI had three turnovers and was limited to 243 yards of offense.
