The St. John Fisher College football team won its sixth consecutive season-opening game on Saturday, cruising to a 49-7 decision over host King's College.
With the game tied at 7-7 midway through the second quarter, Fisher, ranked fifth nationally, scored three touchdowns in a 5:15 span late in the first half to take command, starting a streak of 42 unanswered points.
Senior quarterback Rob Kramer (Oneida/Oneida) tossed a career-high four touchdowns passes in the win. Kramer, who transferred from King's following his freshman season, completed 14-of-20 passes (70.0 % completion percentage) for 145 yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals scored their first touchdown of the 2007 season four minutes into the second quarter. Kramer found senior wide receiver Phil Galletto (Webster Schroeder/Webster) in the end zone for his first career touchdown to cap an 11-play 58-yard drive.
King's tied the game at 7-7 with 8:33 left in the second quarter, but the Cardinals quickly responded, as senior Ryan Hanson (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton) scampered up the right sidelines for a 64-yard touchdown run.
Hanson recorded 126 yards on just nine carries (14.0 yards per carry). He also scored on a two-yard run late in the third quarter.
Senior All-American tight end Chris Harmon (Caledonia-Mumford/Caledonia) finished with four catches for 47 yards and two touchdowns. Harmon scored on a five-yard pass with 4:08 left and tacked on his ninth career touchdown with a two-yard catch on Fisher's first possession of the second half.
Tim Marion (Warwick Valley/Warwick), who finished with three catches for 43 yards, scored on a nine-yard pass with 2:56 left in the first half. He also had a 30-yard punt return to set up Fisher's third touchdown of the day.
While the offense accounted for six touchdowns on the day, the defense did its share, forcing five turnovers, including a 59-yard interception return from Grant Gibson (Cleveland Hill/Cheektowaga) with 6:22 left to close out the scoring.
Anthony Cucit (Greece Athena/Rochester) led the Fisher defense, finishing with a career-high nine tackles in his first career start. The junior also recorded a sack, intercepted a pass deep in King's territory, to set up Fisher's fourth touchdown of the day, and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Steve Flagler (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Sherrill).
Junior Josh Gottlieb (Fox Lane/Pound Ridge) finished with seven tackles, while Micah Norton (Elmira Notre Dame/Lowman) made six tackles and intercepted a pass, which he returned for 35 yards.
Andy Episcopo (Webster Thomas/Webster) and Kevin Schenk (New Hartford/New Hartford) each finished with five tackles, while Steve Stepnick (Iroquois/Cowlesville), Derek Melnyk (Monroe Township/Jamesburg, NJ), Dan Pollock (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton), Matt Becton (St. Joseph's/Buffalo) and Flagler each totaled four tackles. Melnyk also tallied his first career sack.
James Reile (Herkimer/Herkimer) rushed for 76 yards on 18 carries, while Brad Carlton (Monohasen/Schenectady) had a career-long 12-yard rush and one catch for 17 yards.
Galletto, who enjoyed his best game in Fisher uniform, finished with four catches for 40 yards. Josiah Smith (Niagara Wheatfield/Niagara Falls), Corey Jackson (Iroquois/East Aurora) and Jay Brinson (Spencerport/Rochester) each made their first receptions of the season.
Ricky Tatar (Gates-Chili/Rochester) punted four times (all inside the opponent's 20-yard line) for an average of 43.0 yards, while Chris Pierri (Fairport/Fairport) was 7-for-7 on extra points.
Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. next Saturday and will take on host Buffalo State College. The Bengals defeated SUNY Morrisville 37-14 earlier today.
