BATON ROUGE -- The Southern University Jaguars wrapped up the first half of fall camp this weekend, by ending the week with a 120-play scrimmage in front of a couple hundred fans in AW Mumford Stadium on Saturday morning.
The SU Jags will now begin their two week game planning for opening night, August 30th against the University of Houston.
Preseason SWAC Offensive player of the Year, Bryant Lee was 10 of 19 passing for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Backup, Warren Matthews was 7 of 18 for 72 yards and two passing touchdowns.
Byron Williams led the SU rushing attack with 33 yards on 10 carries. DeQuincy Gordon also added 28 yards on six carries. Jerry Joseph and Darian Prentiss also added rushing scores.
Kendrick Smith had two catches for 86 yards and one score (80 yard TD on first play of scrimmage). Freshman LaQuinton Evans had a huge day, with three receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Vince Lands, preseason first team all-SWAC, had three sacks. Seven others had one sack each. Joe Manning and Anthony Wells each had interceptions.

"It seems as if we have been here a long time (practicing), so if feels good to get the first part over with and now getting started in the actual game planning for Houston", says head coach PETE RICHARDSON, now in his 16th season at SU.
"We still have a ways to go", said Richardson after the scrimmage ended on Saturday. "We had too many penalties, and that's a relation to conditioning. And that is something that we will correct. We had way too many holding penalties."
"Two freshmen, Jerry Joseph and LaQuinton Evans, along with Silas Gibbs have had good camps so far. Joseph is going to improve as he learns the system even more, and he has gained the confidence of his teammates. Evans is a competitor, and is very aggressive. He has definitely been impressive."
"The first offense and defense looked pretty good, although the quarterback play has been a little inconsistent at times.
Josh Duran, first team all-SWAC punter in 2007, also was impressive in camp. Duran went 123 of 3 in FG's on Saturday with a long of 42 yards.
"Duran has gotten stronger and he looked good today. It feels good that once you get to the 30 yard line, you have someone who can step up and knock down a 40 yard field goal", say Richardson.
The Jags will hold another scrimmage on Wednesday evening that will be closed to the public and media.
