Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University football team continued its summer workouts last week, with a trio of weight and conditioning exercises prior to the Fourth of July. The holiday weekend marked the mid-point of the summer workouts for the football team. After the holiday, the second summer session will begin and with that, more than 60 players are expected to be on campus.

Each week through the start of preseason camp, members of the Hoya football team will be sharing their thoughts on summer workouts and the coming season. There were about 20 players on campus during the first summer session, including senior slot Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake), who updates this week's summer journal:

"Last week was a very productive week for the Hoya football team. We had a chance to evaluate what kind of progress we have made at the midpoint of our summer workouts.

"On Monday, we tested on the back squat, and many of the players posted some pretty impressive numbers. For conditioning we ran the famous Exorcist stairs to test our endurance, but things got really tough when Coach (Augie) Maurelli made us do an "overtime" session and run the stairs a little longer than expected. Finishing this workout was a true sign of the camaraderie of the team as many of the players pushed one another to get through this tough task.

"On Tuesday, we tested on the power clean and maximum reps on the bench press. Once again, many players did very well. One group in particular that was really impressive during these tests was our offensive linemen: Kelvin Moses, Dan Matheny, Jon Medina, Dan Semler, and George Mosle. They set the bar high for the rest of us to follow.

"On Wednesday we ran the 300 yard shuttle, which is the conditioning test we have to pass at the beginning of preseason. Everyone did so well in this test that Coach Maurelli gave us the rest of the week off for Independence Day.

"Overall, last week was very productive. Many players made tremendous strides in the weight room and with conditioning, which speaks volumes because we're only halfway done. All of the progress that was made was a true testament to the strength and conditioning staff. They have done a great job with us, and we will see more improvement in the weeks to come. This week, we will play 7-on-7 with Bowie State, and we anticipate a great turnout as more players have started to make their way back. With the first game only two months away, we're starting to get in excellent shape and ready to take on Howard."
