Maryland quarterback Jordan Steffy completed 70 of 104 passes for 686 yards and two touchdowns during 2007
July 7, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior quarterback Jordan Steffy is gearing up for his fifth preseason football camp. The Leola, Pa., native brings veteran leadership to the Terps' offense, having started five games in 2007 before being sidelined with a concussion. He completed 70 of 104 passes for 686 yards and two touchdowns last season.
Steffy graduated in May with a degree in kinesiology and will spend the 2008-09 school year obtaining a master's degree in real estate development. When not taking snaps for Maryland, he enjoys bowling and aiding underprivileged and disabled youth through his Children Deserve a Chance Foundation.
Steffy found time in his busy schedule to chat with umterps.com last week.
Your Children Deserve a Chance Foundation raised $15,000 in 2007 for children in need. How did your foundation come about?
"It came about when I was in high school. We did a fundraiser for a classmate and this boy was able to get the surgery that he needed. The impact that it made on his life made me realize that I wanted to do something on a larger scale. I started it back then and filed all the paperwork. Last year we raised $15,000. This year we're hoping to be close to $50,000."
Your foundation has ambitions to construct a developmental youth center in Lancaster, Pa.?
"We're actually in that process right now and I think in the next couple of months we'll have everything up and running. This developmental center is going to be a place for kids to go after school and during the summer to learn and have fun while in a structured environment. We want to take some of the maturity these kids are forced to develop because of family situations and channel it in a positive direction."
What is your best asset as a quarterback?
"I think my knowledge of the game is my best asset."
Why are you pursuing a master's degree in real estate development?
"Since a young age I knew I wanted to be involved in several different areas of business - one being a non-profit, which is my foundation, and another being real estate. I knew I always wanted to do real estate. Everybody needs a place to live and as more people continue to build, land becomes more valuable. I see this point as a great time to get into real estate because of the way the market is and the potential for profit on investments."
You are an avid bowler. Have you been to the lanes recently?
"I actually just took a bowling class last semester. My game is going well. I've been blessed with being pretty good at bowling. The other day I think I bowled a 252."
That is an impressive score. Is bowling a perfect game of 300 within your reach?
"Definitely. I've been close before - I bowled a 279 and missed it by a strike. It's a fun sport. I enjoy it more than anything, and I do think that's a possibility."
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
"Personally, to have a successful season and take a step forward from last year. Most importantly, right now our goal is to win the (Atlantic Coast Conference)."
