June 27, 2008

Cullowhee, N.C. - The annual gridiron grudge-match between Western Carolina and archrival Appalachian State will be broadcast live on SportSouth as a part of the eight-game, game-of-the-week package the Southern Conference announced today. The game, originally slated for a 1:00 pm kickoff, will be moved to 3:00 pm to accommodate television.

This marks the 72nd all-time meeting between Western and Appalachian State with the moonshine jug replica trophy to be awarded for the 33rd time this season. In the mid-1980s, Sports Illustrated magazine designated the series as "the best football rivalry you've never heard of."

Defending co-champions, ASU and Wofford, will be featured three times among the eight broadcasts, with Furman, Georgia Southern and The Citadel playing two games of the week. In addition to Western, Chattanooga, Elon and Samford each will make one televised appearance as a part of the package.

SportSouth's coverage kicks off on Saturday, October 4 when The Citadel visits Appalachian State at 3:00 pm ET and continues with a game each Saturday at 3:00 through November 22.

Back for their second year of Southern Conference football on SportSouth, play-by-play announcer Tom Werme will be joined by analyst Sam Wyche in the SportSouth booth this season.
