BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB quarterback Darrell Hackney has been named among the 50 preseason Watch List candidates for the 2005 Maxwell Award. The Maxwell Award, which will be presented for the 69th time in 2005, is awarded to the nation's Collegiate Player of the Year.
Hackney enters the 2005 season as Conference USA's most prolific signal-caller and one of the best in the nation. The native of Atlanta will head into his senior season with the Blazers with 6,706 passing yards and 47 touchdown passes. He threw for a UAB single-season record 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior in 2004 in leading the Blazers to a C-USA runner-up finish and a berth in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl.
Hackney hit 55.0 percent (197-of-358) of his passes last season and recorded two games with more than 400 yards passing (448 vs. Tulane and 417 vs. Hawai'i). He had two other contests in which he surpassed the 300-yard passing mark (398 vs. Memphis and 337 against TCU). He threw five touchdown passes -- all in the opening half -- in the Blazers' win over the Horned Frogs.
The Watch List includes a field of 50 candidates as selected by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee. Additions and subtractions to the list, based on player performance, will be made throughout the 2005 football season.
One other Conference USA quarterback was also tabbed to the 2005 preseason Watch List -- Houston's Kevin Kolb. Memphis RB DeAngelo Williams is also on the list.
Players selected to this initial watch list have distinguished themselves as All-Conference or All-America selections from their respective universities in past years. Underclassmen are selected based on recommendations from the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee.
The Maxwell Award Watch List has been created as a reference to provide additional assistance to eligible voters and to the media when evaluating potential candidates for this award. The watch list is not intended to represent an all-inclusive listing of candidates for the collegiate awards presented by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia.
Ten semi-finalists will be announced in October 2005, and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November 2005. The winner of the Maxwell Award will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN in December 2005. The formal presentation of the Maxwell Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Banquet in February 2006.
Hackney will enter his senior year with nearly 7,000 career passing yards and 47 TD passes.
