Toal Named To Bednarik Award Watch List

June 13, 2006

Boston College junior Brian Toal has been named to the 2006 Watch List for the 12th Chuck Bednarik Award for Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.

Players selected to the watch list have distinguished themselves as All-Conference or All-America selections from their respective universities in past years. Twelve semi-finalists for the award will be announced in October and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November. The winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN in December. The formal presentation will take place at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Banquet in March, 2007.

Toal, a 6-1, 238-pound linebacker from Wyckoff, N.J., was recently named to the Sporting News preseason All-ACC second team. He enters his junior year with 130 career tackles (69 solos), 11.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, three pass breakups, one punt block and one blocked field goal. Last season, he played on both sides of the ball, making his mark as the team's short-yardage back. He carried the ball 21 times for 49 yards and a team-leading six touchdowns, scoring the biggest TD of his career at Clemson to give BC the overtime victory.

Other ACC players included on the Watch List include Jonathon Abbate, LB, Wake Forest; Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson; Xavier Adibi, LB, Virginia Tech; Kareem Brown, DL, Miami; Buster Davis, LB, Florida State; Vince Hall, LB, Virginia Tech; Brandon Meriweather, DB, Miami; Kenny Phillips, DB, Miami; DeMario Pressley, DL, N.C.
