LOGAN, Utah - Utah State cornerback Jerome Dennis signed a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts recently. He is the only Aggie to have signed on with the NFL this year as of Tuesday.
Dennis, a 6-1, 192-pound cornerback played three seasons at USU, starting his final year. This past season he recorded 48 tackles to rank sixth on the team, while also recording one interception and breaking up two passes.
Dennis, from Van Nuys, Calif., was one of the nation's best kickoff returners as a sophomore in 2002, ranking seventh in the country with a 22.7 average. That year he had a stretch of three straight games with one return of at least 60 yards.
He played three games as a junior in 2003 before doctors found a blood clot in his shoulder which sidelined him for the rest of the season. He had recorded 12 tackles and had returned 11 kickoffs for a 23.0 average before seeing his year end.
This past season Dennis started nine of 11 games at left cornerback. He started the year by recording seven tackles against Alabama and nine against Idaho. He was credited with at least six tackles in five different games and had an interception against Clemson.
In 35 career games he posted 95 tackles with half of those coming in his final season, as well as two interceptions.
