POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist football team held its annual Spring Game on Saturday, as the Red squad defeated White by a score of 8-7 in a contest played under the lights at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The night also included an alumni flag football game which preceded the contest, and recognition of returning football alumni during the coin toss.

"It was great to see so many alums come back," Head Coach Jim Parady said. "The night couldn't have been any better. To have them come and see how far the program has come was just terrific."

The only touchdown of the game came in the second quarter on a fourth-and-goal play from the three. Quarterback John Schaeffer was flushed out of the pocket, and then recovered to find wide receiver Eric Lanthier on a deflection. The ensuing extra point enabled White to take a 7-3 halftime lead.

The score was 7-6 White entering the fourth quarter, as both Kevin Pauly and Patrick Sages kicked field goals for Red. With under three minutes to play, Pauly's punt pinned White at its own one. On third down from the one, Red recorded a safety to take an 8-7 lead.

After the ensuing free kick, White was able to get a stop and get the ball back with less than two minutes to play. However, freshman Rory Foley forced a fumble which the Red team recovered deep in its own territory to preserve the victory.

Foley also recorded two sacks, and sophomore Nic Zivic had a pair of interceptions for the Red squad.

"There was some good hitting," Parady said. "The defense played very well. Foley is the one guy who really stood out to me. I was pleased with the overall play in the game."

The game marked the end of spring practice for the Red Foxes, who will begin the 2008 season at San Diego on Aug. 29. The first of Marist's six home games in the upcoming season will come the next week, when the Red Foxes host Lafayette at 6 p.m. on Sept. 6.
