Both Sides of the Ball Have Their Moments in First Scrimmage

Offense scores three touchdowns as defense forces three turnovers

Russel Hill went 12-18 and 117 yards with a touchdown in the first scrimmage

April 12, 2008

Pocatello, ID -- Sophomore quarterback Russel Hill was efficient with his arm leading the offense to two of their three touchdowns. He would have had another one, but a well placed pass in the end zone was dropped on the opening drive. At the end of the day, Hill went 12-18 for 117 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Jeremy Gibson's eight tackles led a defensive unit that forced four three and outs and picked up three turnovers.

On the first drive, Hill lead the team on a drive that came up just short on a dropped pass. After that the defense forced three and outs in the next three drives. The defense ended the very next drive early when Chris Holmsely picked off Hill.

The rushing attack joined the fun on the next drive when Hill led a drive that ended with a Ken Cornist six yard touchdown run for the first score of the day. The offense picked up 102 yards rushing led by Ben Laporta who rushed for 33 yards on six carries.

The defense then took their turn to shine keeping the offense out of the end zone for the next three drives. They forced one three and out and Keith Goins, Jr. snagged the second interception of the day off of Evan Mozzochi.

The scrimmage then shifted to red zone drives. Starting at the 20 yard line, Hill drove the offense into the end zone for the only touchdown pass of the day when he connected with Isaiah Burel for a 10 yard toss. With Kyle Blum at quarterback, the offense also scored on a one play drive from the 21 yard line when Blum ran an option play that resulted in Kelvin Krosch taking it the distance for a touchdown.

The defense held firm in the three other red zone drives allowing just one field goal and recovering a fumble. On the day, the defense had five tackles for a loss with 26 different players recording a tackle.

Mike Ramos was 1-4 on field goals, connecting on a 29 yard attempt. He went wide right on attempts from 29, 31, and 24 yards. Ramos was a perfect 2-2 on extra point attempts.
