Director of Athletics Brian Colleary announced today that Joe Bernard has been named interim football coach at Duquesne University. Bernard, who served as the Dukes' defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, steps in for former coach Greg Gattuso who has accepted a position at the University of Pittsburgh.
Bernard came to Duquesne after spending seven seasons at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. The Parsippany, N.J. native was the Stags' defensive coordinator from the program's inception in 1996 through 2001 - his first season as head coach. He guided Fairfield to back-to-back third-place finishes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League in 2001 & 2002. In 2001, the last season Bernard served as both defensive coordinator and head coach, Fairfield ranked among the nation's top 20 in six different categories.
His 2003 Duquesne defense ranked 17th in scoring defense on the way to helping the Dukes to the I-AA National Championship. DU finished 14th in total defense this past season.
The 41-year-old Bernard held high school coaching positions at Bethlehem Catholic and Nazareth High Schools prior to accepting the defensive coordinator position at Fairfield.
