Paterno Likes Idea of 'Early-Bird' Bowl

Jan. 4, 2006

MIAMI (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno dislikes the way the Bowl Championship Series allows television to dictate starting times, and he would prefer an earlier kickoff.

That's especially true with two septuagenarian coaches involved - such as in the Orange Bowl. Paterno's team beat Bobby Bowden's Florida State Seminoles 26-23 in three overtimes, but many fans missed the wild finish early Wednesday because they were asleep.

Paterno, 79, joked that the game kept him up well past bedtime. Bowden is 76.

"My daughter said to me, `When you and Bowden are going to play each other again, they have that early-bird dinner. Why don't you have an early-bird TV game?"' Paterno said.

"I thought that was pretty good. I'm going to propose that to ABC - that we play the game at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I'm sure they'll be very happy with that."
