UC Davis Dominates UC Santa Cruz, 71-49

DAVIS, Calif. (AP) -- Freshman Mark Payne had 14 points, six steals, five rebounds, and three assists to lead UC Davis over Santa Cruz 71-49 on Sunday.

David Carter added 12 points and six rebounds and Shane Hanson had 11 points and three rebounds for the Aggies (2-2).

After Payne converted a steal into a score, UC Davis led 46-28 at the 16:18 mark in the second half.

The Banana Slugs roared back to cut the Aggies lead 50-44 on a 3-point shot by guard Carlos Leon Jr., but Shane Hanson's three-pointer with 6:49 remaining ignited a 17-0 run that kept the Aggies ahead for good.

Payne and Michael Boone had eight points apiece to guide UC Davis to a 35-26 halftime lead.

Senior forward Jon Morrison led UC Santa Cruz (0-1) with 11 points.
