CLEVELAND, Ohio -- J'Nathan Bullock, a three-time all-city choice at Flint (Mich.) Northern High School, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Cleveland State and play basketball beginning in the fall of 2005. Viking head coach Mike Garland made the announcement on Thursday.

"J'Nathan's versatility on the court makes him a perfect fit for our system," Garland said. "He is strong enough and physical enough to have an inside presence but he has the ball-handling and shooting skills of a guard."

"His athleticism has allowed him to split his time between football and basketball throughout his high school career and excel at both. Once he concentrates on just basketball, that athleticism should allow him to develop into an outstanding player," Garland added.

A 6-4 forward, Bullock averaged 17.3 points and 10.1 rebounds a game as a junior last year, shooting .545 from the field to earn first team all-city and all-region honors. He also received first team all-city accolades as a freshman and sophomore along with being a second team all-region choice as a sophomore.

A nominee for the 2005 McDonald's All-America team, he is ranked as the 28th best player in the state of Michigan by Prepspotlight.com and was voted the League MVP and All-Star Game Runnerup MVP at the 2004 Cage Scope/Blue-Chip Basketball Camp in Georgetown, KY.

A preseason honorable mention all-state choice in football this year by Michiganpreps.com, Bullock showed his versatility on the football field as well. During the course of the 2004 season, he played every skill position on offense as well as defensive end and linebacker, earning first team all-city and second team all-conference and all-region honors.

"What I like best about J'Nathan is that he is a kid of high character and quality," Garland said. "He followed through on his commitment to play football this year even though he knew that the team was not going to enjoy a lot of success and that he wanted to continue playing basketball at the collegiate level."

The addition of Bullock leaves Cleveland State with four open scholarships for the 2005-06 season, though Garland does not expect to fill all of the roster slots this fall.

"We may add another player or two and then wait until spring to determine what our needs will be," Garland said.

The Vikings open the 2004-05 regular season at home against Hillsdale College on Saturday, Nov. 20. Season tickets and ticket packages are available by contacting the CSU Athletic Ticket office at (216) 687-4848. Single game seats are available through Ticketmaster.
