Pepperdine Men's Basketball Team Receives votes In ESPN/USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll

With 11 letterwinners returning, including five starters, the Pepperdine men's basketball team was among teams receiving votes in the ESPN / USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll that was released on Thursday. The Waves received two votes in the poll.

Pepperdine concluded the 2003-04 season with a 15-16 overall record and tied for second in the West Coast Conference (WCC) with a 9-5 mark. The Waves advanced to the semi-finals of the WCC Tournament.

The 2004-05 team is highlighted by the return of senior All-WCC forwards Yakhouba Diawara and Glen McGowan along with junior All-WCC guard Alex Acker.

McGowan averaged 17.9 points and 5.4 rebounds a contest while Diawara played in the final 14 games of the season and contributed 18.9 points and 6.6 rebounds a contest.


Acker averaged 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals a contest.

Kansas, which posted a 24-9 overall record in 2003-04, topped the poll with 741 points. The Jayhawks received eight first-place votes to finish ahead of Wake Forest, which tallied 724 points and had 12 first-place votes.

North Carolina was third in the poll and was followed by Georgia Tech, Illinois, Syracuse, defending national champion Connecticut, Oklahoma State, Kentucky and Michigan State, which rounded out the Top 10

Pepperdine makes its 2004-05 debut on Saturday, November 6, when it hosts Fort Lewis College in an exhibition beginning at 7 p.m.

The Waves open their 29-game schedule on Wednesday, November 17, when they travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to face East Carolina in the opener of the BCA Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. (PST).
