EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior guard Drew Neitzel has been named a preseason first-team All-American by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. As a result, Neitzel will appear on the cover of the magazine. Last year, he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors, while earning second-team All-America accolades from Dick Vitale and CBS Sportsline.com and honorable mention All-America recognition from The Associated Press.
Neitzel will be joined on the magazine cover by Tennessee's Chris Lofton, Georgetown's Roy Hibbert, North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough and Marquette's Dominic James. Fans may pre-order the 27th edition of Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook at www.blueribbonyearbook.com or by calling 1-866-805-BALL (2255). The magazine is expected to ship in early October.
"I've always admired Drew Neitzel, but last year I began to realize I couldn't think of many - if any - guards in the entire country I'd rather have if I was starting a college team from scratch," said Chris Dortch, editor of Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. "I think he epitomizes all that is great about college basketball."
During the 2006-07 season, Neitzel averaged a team-best 18.1 points per game, ranking fourth in the Big Ten in scoring. He scored 20 or more points in 17 games. He made 114-of-277 3-point attempts, ranking as the second-best single-season total for made 3-pointers in MSU history. He led the Big Ten in free-throw percentage (.879) and 3-point field goals made per game (3.26 pg), while ranking second in minutes played per game (35.69 mpg), fourth in scoring (18.1 ppg), fifth in assists (4.31 apg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.84) and seventh in 3-point field-goal percentage (.412).
