Men's Basketball Prepares for Canada Trip

49ers To Play Three Games Over Labor Day Weekend

Halton Arena - The Charlotte 49ers will be getting a preseason peek at the 2008-09 edition when the men's basketball team travels to Canada for a preseason trip, Aug. 29-Sept. 1 The 49ers will play three games in Canada.

Charlotte returns four starters and 9 of its top 10 players from a year ago, when it posted a 20-win season and advanced to the NIT. The 49ers (20-14) tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10 and reached the A-10 Tournament semifinals. Returning starters include senior forwards Lamont Mack and Charlie Coley, junior point guard Dijuan Harris and sophomore wing An'Juan Wilderness. The 20-win season was the fifth in head coach Bobby Lutz's 10 seasons and the NIT bid was the 49ers eighth post-season appearance in Lutz's 10 seasons. Lutz became the 49ers all-time winningest coach, last year.

In preparation for the trip, the team began practicing with returners only on Friday, Aug. 22 in the Hayward Memorial Practice Court. New players Shamarr Bowden, Rashad Coleman and Shamari Spears will join practice once classes have begun, Monday, Aug. 25. The 49ers final practice will be Friday before leaving campus for a late afternoon flight.
