NEW YORK, CSTV: College Sports Television (www.cstv.com), the fastest growing independent cable network, and NIKE have entered into a programming, marketing and advertising partnership that will include video-on-demand, broadband and retail components. CSTV, the first "post-30-second commercial" television network, will also play an integral marketing role in the introduction next month of the new Nike Training initiative, and will have its programming incorporated into Nike's Football Rivalry Series this fall.
In addition, Nike will become the sponsor of and will assist in developing Nike Training Camp, a CSTV original program series produced in high definition that will premiere Sunday, November 23. Nike Training Camp will feature top coaches across various college sports sharing their keys to success through instruction, training techniques and motivation for aspiring college and amateur athletes. The November 23 premiere (5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT) will feature Gary Williams, head men's basketball coach at the University of Maryland, whose 2002 team won the NCAA national championship.
The CSTV-Nike partnership will result in joint marketing programs meant to drive in-store traffic to Nike products and drive digital cable and video-on-demand distribution. Joint partnerships between key Nike retailers and CSTV cable affiliates will support CSTV and Nike's video-on-demand and broadband offerings. CSTV is committed to providing unprecedented national exposure for student-athletes participating in more than 25 sports at over 1,300 colleges while maintaining the integrity of intercollegiate athletics.
The Nike Football Rivalry Series consists of a customized Nike mobile unit that makes stops during the fall at the best rivalry games in football, enabling football fans nationwide to experience an array of Nike products and content. CSTV will create on-air reports and other programming originating from the mobile unit that will air within select CSTV programming.
In addition to Williams, other coaches already scheduled to participate in Nike Training Camp are Mike Davis, Billy Donovan and Bob Huggins, men's basketball coaches at Indiana, Florida and Cincinnati, respectively, as well as North Carolina women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance and Stanford women's volleyball coach John Dunning.
"Creating a broad relationship with the world's pre-eminent maker of sports performance apparel, footwear and equipment will enable CSTV to tap into a wealth of resources that will ultimately benefit our viewers and distribution partners," said Chris Bevilacqua, co-founder and executive vice president, CSTV. "Our abilities to tap into non-traditional marketing and promotional opportunities, while taking advantage of our existing assets, will bring enhanced value to our respective constituencies. Nike's commitment to college athletics is consistent with our mission of growing the college sports landscape through increased participation, attendance, television audience and community involvement."
"College sports has long been an integral part of Nike's culture, with its passion and loyalties not found elsewhere," said Adam Helfant, vice president, United States sports marketing, Nike. "CSTV's ability to create unique and proprietary programming and marketing programs across multiple media platforms will enable us to enhance our already significant commitment to college sports."
