Josh Jackson scored a game high 26 points in the win over West Georgia.
Feb. 9, 2008
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Josh Jackson dropped a season high 26 points on the West Georgia Wolves and helped the Argos win their first conference home game. UWF not only defeated the Wolves, they convincingly won by 17 points, with the game ending at 85-68. The Argos have now won two conference games, and improved their overall record to 12-9. Charles Bouie chipped in with 20 points and two blocked shots.
West Florida raced out to an early lead with Kenny Holmes hitting his first three shots of the game, one of them being a two-handed dunk. The Argos built a huge lead and led by 19 points with 3:57 left in the first half, but let the Wolves go on an eight point run before Josh Jackson snapped it with a baseline jumper. West Georgia pressed throughout the entire game, and it did give the Argos some trouble, but it didn't affect their shooting. UWF shot an impressive 57.1% in the first half, and held West Georgia to only 43.8%.
Kenny Holmes ended the first half with eight points, Charles Bouie added nine, while Ryan Henry had 10, after hitting three long three pointers. Meanwhile, Josh Jackson was heating up and led all scorers with 12 points at the break. The score was 44-30 at the half, and UWF headed into the locker room with a healthy lead.
West Georgia began pressure as soon as the second half started, and knocked UWF's lead all the way down to only six points before Coach Hogan called a timeout. After Hogan's timeout, West Georgia and UWF battled to gain momentum, and West Georgia got the lead down to five points, but that was as close as they could get.
The Argos won the second half of the game from the free-throw line. Charles Bouie was 8-9 from the charity stripe, and Deondre Boynton only missed one also, shooting 6-7 from the line. UWF quickly figured out how to break the press, and turned it into fast break layups. On one possession, Kenny Holmes banked in a three pointer as the shot clocked sounded, and right after that, he got a great pass from Josh Jackson for a two-handed slam.
Josh Jackson only missed two field goals in the second half, and shot 11-16 for the night. Charles Bouie was the only Argo to foul out, but before he did, he added 20 points. Coach Hogan was pleased with the win, and even happier with the free throw shooting. "It's good to win this game at home," Hogan said. "The press did bother us, but at halftime I told them to be aggressive and go for layups. I'm pleased with how consistent we were from the free throw line too, and it's good to finish with a win."
Josh Jackson and Charles Bouie were the leading scorers for the Argos, and after the game their focus was more on how the team played. "I'm excited about the team chemistry," Jackson said. "This win is big, and I don't really care about my points. Not only did we win, but we won big, and that shows the other teams that we can compete in this conference." Charles Bouie was happy that they closed this one with a victory also. "We executed our offense right, and I'm happy and surprised with the win," Bouie said. "We've been working on trying not to come out looking sluggish, and I think we accomplished that tonight."
The Argos starting five all scored in double digits. Deondre Boynton finished with 10, Ryan Henry and Kenny Holmes had 13 points each, Charles Bouie had 20, and Josh Jackson led the way with 26 points. The Argos next game is at home on Monday against Alabama-Huntsville at 7:30 p.m. The women play first at 5:30 p.m., and both games will be broadcast on stretch internet.
