LINCOLN, Neb.-- Senior shortstop Derek Shunk (Yardley, Pa.) has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason All-America first team, it was announced last week. Shunk was the only player from a BIG EAST school to earn first team honors and one of only three conference players listed among the three teams chosen.

As a junior last season, Shunk batted .357 with an on-base percentage of .444 and a slugging percentage of .471. Along the way, he became just the ninth player in school history with at least 200 career hits and finished the year just 37 hits shy of breaking the program's career record of 242 hits. Shunk scored 49 runs and drove in 34 last season, collecting 12 doubles, three triples and two home runs. He also led the team with 29 walks, struck out just 30 times in 255 plate appearances and stole seven bases in as many tries.

Shunk earned All-BIG EAST third team mention for his play last year and was also the Philadelphia Big Five Baseball Offensive Co-Player of the Year. He was named the NCBWA District I Player of the Year and a third team All-America selection as well.

In his first three seasons at Villanova, Shunk has started all but one team game and has hit at least .325 each year. He is a .340 collegiate hitter with a .425 on-base percentage and will assuredly leave his mark on the school record books upon his graduation following the 2008 campaign. In a program that began play in 1865 - Villanova is the third-oldest NCAA program behind Fordham and Yale - Shunk is likely to rank in the top 10 in school history in eight offensive categories, with a chance to break as many as three career records.

The other shortstops chosen to the All-America team included juniors Danny Espinosa (Long Beach State) on the second team and Brandon Crawford (UCLA) on the third team. Espinosa batted .319 with 13 doubles last season, while Crawford hit .335 with 17 doubles, 50 runs and 55 RBI.

Joining Shunk from the BIG EAST in earning preseason All-America honors were Louisville senior pitcher Zack Pitts and Cincinnati senior outfielder Tony Campana. Pitts earned second team honors after going 10-3 with a 2.52 ERA last season, allowing just 105 hits and 24 walks in 121 2/3 innings. Campana was on the third team after a year in which he hit .329 for the Bearcats with 60 stolen bases.

The NCBWA was founded in 1962 and is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball.

Villanova opens the 2008 season with a three-game series against Big Ten member Michigan from February 22-24. The series will be played at Traditions Field in Port St. Lucie, Fla., the spring training home of the New York Mets.
