Fifteen Signees Commit to Marshall Baseball for 2008

Early signing class consists of 14 high school seniors and one junior college transfer

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Head coach Jeff Waggoner has announced his first Marshall baseball recruiting class, and it is a diverse one which features 14 high school seniors and one junior college player from across the nation. The early signing period class features players from eight states and includes three players from the Huntington area.

The signees include Huntington High School infielder/catcher Brycen Ferguson, Ashland (Ky.) pitcher Justin Moore, Hurricane (W.Va.) pitcher Arik Sikula, outfielder/catcher Rhett Stafford from Cheraw, S.C., left-handed pitcher Chad McLin of Red Oak, Texas, right-handed pitcher Chad Johnson of Marietta, Ga., first baseman Tyler Oliver of Lexington, Ky., Victor Gomez (C/INF) and Kenny Socorro (INF) from Miami, Fla.), teammates Ben Jurevicius (OF) and Shane Farrell (RHP) from St. Ignatius Prep in Cleveland, left-handed pitcher/catcher Samuel Freeman from North Central Texas College, right-handed pitcher John Warmus from Uniontown, Ohio, catcher/right-handed pitcher Kevin Shackelford of Charlotte, N.C., and right-handed pitcher/infielder Ian Kadish from Cincinnati.

"This is an excellent start to our class for the 2008 team," Waggoner said. "This is a group of great student-athletes who all have tremendous character. Our coaching staff is very proud our incoming class and confident these new players will provide the program with a strong, positive direction. My recruiting coordinator Tim Adkins and assistant coach Tim Donnelly did an outstanding job of reaching our goals in bringing in a talented high school class along with a fine junior college player."

Class AAA All-State ... hit .315 with 12 doubles and 12 stolen bases last season ... strong defensively with .975 fielding percentage ... member of Huntington Hounds Summer Program

Samuel Freeman, LHP/OF, 6-0, 175, Carrolton, Texas/North Central Texas College
Hit .333 with 12 stolen bases last season ... Also tossed 14 2/3 innings and struck out 15 ... All-District Player ... North Texas All-Star Team

Victor Gomez, C/INF, 6-2, 215, Miami, Fla./Lasalle
Second-team All-District ... Second-team All-County ... hit .390 with 30 hits (four home runs) and 26 RBI last year ... Member of Florida Bombers and Miami Bashers

Chad Johnson, RHP, 6-3, 200, Marietta, Ga./Lassister
Went 5-1 with five saves last season ... threw 55 innings, allowing just 42 hits while striking out 40 and walking 10 ... played on back-to-back Georgia State championship teams ... also three-year starter in football

Ben Jurevicius, OF, 6-0, 195, Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Ignatius
Hit .444 with 36 hits, four doubles, two home runs and 11 stolen bases ... two-time All-Conference selection, Member of Midwest Redbirds Fall Scout Team

Class AA All-State in 2005 and 2006 ... No. 1 catching prospect in South Carolina ... 2005-06 All-Region ... hit .414 with four home runs, 10 doubles and 25 RBI last season
