UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith announced the signing of 15 student-athletes on Friday.

LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball received signed national letters of intent from 15 student-athletes who will enroll at UNLV next fall and begin playing in 2008 for the Rebels, head coach Buddy Gouldsmith announced Friday.
"I am extremely excited about this class. Its depth is a tribute to the tireless work of our recruiting coordinator, Scott Malone, and the entire staff," said Gouldsmith. "This group of signees is rich in pitching and possesses a great deal of athleticism."
It is a group that is made up of nine high school athletes and six junior college transfers. The prep athletes include Gabe Arcoleo, Justin Baca, Kyle Konicek, Al McCormick, Eddie McKiernan, Matt Tassinari, Troy Watson and Thomas Whitsett. The transfers are Joe DiMaggio, BJ Ferguson, Justin Garcia, Corey Hales, Cameron Selik and Ryan Thorton.
This year's recruiting class is made up of individuals from five different states, including seven from California, four from Nevada, two from Illinois and one each from Arizona and Utah.
"The characteristics and strengths of this class will complement the players set to return and will impact our baseball program both short and long term," Gouldsmith said. "Perhaps most importantly, this class consists of leaders who will be great representatives and future ambassadors of our program and university."

Justin Baca - Is a senior at Sierra Vista HS in Las Vegas ... a right-handed pitcher who went 9-1 with a 1.35 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched as a junior ... earned second team all-city honors ... plans on majoring in physical therapy ... brother Marc is entering his first year in the UNLV program and will be a sophomore pitcher ... was also being recruited by Oregon State, Kansas State and BYU.
Joe DiMaggio - Currently enrolled at Mesa Community College ... can play all three outfield positions ... earned all-conference honors ... prepped at Prairie Ridge HS in Crystal Lake, Ill. ... hit .411 in high school and was voted his team's captain as a senior ... led his team in defensive assists his final year at Prairie Ridge ... plans on majoring in business communications ... picked the Rebels over Northern Illionis, Arizona State and Southern Utah.
BJ Ferguson - A right-handed pitcher who is currently a sophomore at Salt Lake City Community College ... went 8-2 with a 1.44 ERA in 13 appearances and 12 starts for the Bruins ... struck out 40 batters and walked 14 in 62.2 innings on the mound ... tossed two complete games in being named second team All-SWAC as a freshman ... prepped at Cottonwood HS in Taylorsville, Utah ... first team Class 5A All State as a high school senior ... was picked in the 33rd round of the 2005 draft by the Chicago Cubs ... picked the Rebels over Utah, Hawaii and Wright State.
Justin Garcia - A right-handed pitcher who will be a sophomore for Western Nevada Community College in Carson City ... helped pitch the Wildcats to the Scenic West Conference championship ... a Las Vegas native who prepped at Sierra Vista HS ... plans on majoring in business.
Corey Hales - A right handed pitcher who is currently enrolled at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher ... prepped at Aztec HS ... second team all-district selection as a senior in high school ... was a four-time academic honor roll student while also lettering four times in football and basketball at Aztec HS ... plans on majoring in sports management ... picked the Rebels over Utah, Virginia Tech and New Mexico State.
Kyle Konicek - Currently a senior at Green Valley HS in Henderson, Nev. ... a multi-positional athlete ... Hit .423 with six home runs and 39 RBI for the Gators last year ... named the GVHS Offensive Player of the Year ... earned first team All-Sunrise division, second team All-Southern Nevada and third team All-State honors as a junior last year ... interested in majoring in business management ... picked the Rebels over such schools as Arizona, Baylor, Santa Clara and Kentucky.
Al McCormick - A senior at De LaSalle Institute in Chicago ... primarily a shortstop but can also play the outfield and pitch ... stole 50 bases last year while playing in the Top Tier League of the Chicago Scout League ... plans on majoring in engineering ... picked UNLV over Miami and Oklahoma.
Eddie McKiernan - A senior at Monrovia HS in Monrovia, Calif. ... a pitcher who also plays middle infield ... went 12-2 with two saves and a 0.73 ERA last year for the Wildcats ... struck out 114 batters and walked only 12 in 86 innings of work ... also hit .473 with four home runs and 33 RBI as a junior ... named the Rio Honda League MVP as a junior as well as the CIF player of the year ... a first team all-state selection ... plans on majoring in business ... was also being recruited by Arizona State, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
Casey Reese - Currently a senior at Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas ... a pitcher who also plays third base ... helped the Gaels win the 2006 state championship ... went 4-1 with a save in 13 appearances, including six starts ... struck out 38 batters and walked just 17 in 32.1 innings of work ... plans on majoring in either hotel management or business administration.
Cameron Selik - A right-handed pitcher for Grossmont College in Calif. ... appeared in 19 games last year, including one start ... went 2-1 with four saves in 42.2 innings of work ... struck out 26 batters and walked only 12 while posting an ERA of 3.80 ... prepped at Patrick Henry HS in San Diego ... chose the Rebels over Texas Tech, Oral Roberts and Pepperdine.
