Charlotte, N.C. -
With the MLB league championship series this weekend, former 49er stalwarts have made their presence known, contributing to the national event. From scouting to officiating, Charlotte's ties to the professional leagues and the postseason are stronger than ever.
- Former Charlotte player Fieldon Culbreth (1984-'86), who led the 1984 team in RBI (43) and home runs (10), served as the home plate umpire for game four of the Yankees-Indians division playoff series.
- Former Charlotte pitcher Jason Stanford (1998-'99) spent a significant amount of time in the big leagues with the Indians this year. As a 49er, Stanford led the team in wins with 10 and 8 for the 1998 and 1999 seasons, respectively, joining just seven former 49ers in the 10-win club.
- Former Charlotte player Danny Montgomery (1984-'86), who led the 49ers with 53 runs in 1986, is an advanced scout for the Rockies.
- Former Charlotte Assistant Coach Jay Matthews is an area scout for the Rockies.
- Indians Manager Eric Wedge, the catcher for the 1989 National Championship team, played at Wichita State under then-assistant Shockers coach and current 49er head coach Loren Hibbs.
