The University of Texas-Pan American head baseball coach Willie Gawlik announced on Monday (Aug. 22) that a pair of junior college standouts in Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) and Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro College) have joined the Broncs for the upcoming 2006 season.
Brooks, a 6-1 third baseman from Vallejo, CA, was part of a Santa Rosa Junior College squad that captured the California Community College Baseball State Championship during the 2005 season. He recorded a .328, which ranked him fifth on the Bears' squad, while collecting 60 hits and 32 runs batted in. The newly-signed UTPA infielder notched 16 doubles, one triple and one home run during the season while plating 34 runs.
Along with winning the 2005 California Community College Baseball State Championship, Brooks comes from a program that has captured eight consecutive Bay Valley West Conference Championships and five regional championships.
"We are extremely excited to get a player of Patrick's caliber in our program. He is a solid all-around third baseman, which is something that we've been looking for over the past couple of seasons. He was a two-year starter at a Santa Rosa program that always produces very good, sound players," said Gawlik.
Bartosh comes to the Rio Grande Valley from Navarro College where he was a versatile two-year player while seeing the majoring of his time behind the dish. In his final campaign with the Bulldogs, Bartosh notched a .290 batting average for a squad that finished with a 38-18 record. Navarro College, a member of TEAC (Texas Eastern Athletic Conference) was a two-time regional qualifier during his tenure, including winning the conference title in 2004.
"Lyndon comes from a solid Navarro College program, and he did a good job for them over the past two years. He is a good, sound player that can play a variety of positions so there is a lot we can do with him in the lineup. He's going to be a very valuable player for us," concluded Gawlik.
