University of Texas - Pan American head baseball coach Willie Gawlik didn't need to go to ITT Tech to fill a need on his baseball team. Instead, that need came to him in the form of a versatile transfer from Texas Tech.

The Broncs' skipper announced on Friday (Aug. 20) that Jacob Jones (Plainview TX/Texas Tech Univ.) will join Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State Univ.) as the second Big 12 Conference transfer to sign with UTPA this summer.

"We're excited to have Jacob on our team. He brings us tremendous experience at both the junior college and Division I level, and we're expecting him to make an immediate contribution. Along with playing a number of positions, Jacob has speed and can hit from both sides of the plate so he's going to be a great fit for our team," said Gawlik.

Jones was part of a Red Raiders' team that concluded the 2004 season with a 40-21 record and third-place finishing in the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech advanced to the Regional Championship where it lost to Georgia Tech, who was ranked fifth in the nation. During the season, Jones saw action in 22 games where he batted .208 with one home run and five runs batted in.

Prior to attending Texas Tech, Jones was a two-year starter for Navarro Junior College. In his final season, he batted .364 with six home runs en route to helping Navarro capture a share of the conference championship. He also threw out 35 runners from behind the dish.

A native of Plainview, TX, Jones attended Plainview High School where he earned all-state honors as a senior and was twice named an all-district selection. He was a two-sport athlete where he starred on the gridiron as well as the diamond.
