University of Texas-Pan American head baseball coach Willie Gawlik announced on Wednesday (July 6) that UT - Brownsville catcher Blake Whittlesey (Marble Falls, TX/University of Texas - Brownsville) has inked a National Letter of Intent to join the Broncs during the 2005-06 academic year.

"We're extremely excited about the addition of Blake Whittlesey to our roster," said Gawlik. "Blake can play multiple positions, and it's always a positive sign for the program when you can add a player with his versatility. He's a quality person and player, and it's a great addition for us."

Whittlesey finished with a .320 batting average while notching four home runs, 37 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases en route to earning Most Improved Player honors following the 2005 season. He helped guide the Scorpions to a 27-22 record. The newly-signed Bronc earned Dean's List accolades following the spring semester.

A product of Marble Falls High School, Whittlesey was a first team all-district selection as a senior and was cited as his prep squad's Most Valuable Player. He earned second team all-district laurels as a junior. Whittlesey garnered three letters on the diamond for Marble Falls.

During the summer following his senior season, Whittlesey was named the Most Valuable Player of the Perfect Games Tournament in Atlanta, GA, where he competed with the Austin Baseball Club.

Whittlesey is the son of Clayton and Beverly Whittlesey. He chose UTPA over Sam Houston State, St. Edward's (TX) and Northwest Missouri State.
