WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore Allan Dykstra has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2007 Golden Spikes Award, as announced Tuesday by USA Baseball. The award, to be announced June 29, is presented annually to the premier amateur baseball player.
Dykstra is hitting .333 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs on the season. The San Diego native is slugging .667 and has an on-base percentage of .473 in 49 games. He leads the Demon Deacons in almost every offensive category.
The sophomore first baseman ranks in the top five in the ACC in home runs, RBIs, total bases and slugging percentage. He is also among the league leaders in on-base percentage and walks.
Dykstra is one of 50 Golden Spikes semifinalists representing 40 schools across the country. The semifinalist list includes 10 players from the ACC, the most by any conference in the nation. The winner's name will be announced June 29, 2007, during the 2007 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Show presented by Major League Baseball.
Dykstra was also named to the preseason watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is presented annually to the national college baseball player of the year.
