FISHKILL, N.Y. - Behind three hits apiece from sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.), freshman center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) and junior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.), the Marist baseball team cruised to an 11-2 victory over Army on Wednesday at Dutchess Stadium before 2,275 fans in the third annual WPDH Hudson Valley Baseball Classic.
After Army scored twice in its half of the third, the Red Foxes scored 11 unanswered runs and put runs on the board in six consecutive innings. After scoring a run on a balk, Marist tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by McDonough.
The Red Foxes then erupted for four runs in the fourth. An RBI single by Curylo drove in Gallic and made it 3-2 Marist. After junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) scored on a throwing error to put Marist up two, red-shirt freshman catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) belted a two-run single, which made the score 6-2 in favor of the Red Foxes. Marist batted around in the fourth.
Gallic, who had led off the fourth, led off the fifth again by reaching base, this time on a double to left. He scored on a single by Curylo to make it 7-2 Marist. The Red Foxes made it 8-2 an inning later when senior catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) hit a pinch-hit homer to left field.
The Red Foxes added two runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Curylo, followed by Meyer scoring on a wild pitch. Marist's 11th and final run of the contest came in the eighth on an RBI single Meyer, which plated Glasser.
Freshman right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) got the victory for the Red Foxes, tossing two scoreless innings in relief of starter Sean McKeown (Hillborough, N.J.), who went the first three. Chapin allowed just one hit as he improved to 3-1 on the season and earned his second win of the season against Army. Sophomore right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless sixth, and freshman righty Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) followed with two scoreless innings of his own. Junior right-hander Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) closed it out by striking out two in the ninth. The Marist bullpen has now tossed 14.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
In addition to his three hits, Curylo also drove in three runs. Gallic scored three runs and handled eight chances flawlessly in center field. The Red Foxes pounded out 16 hits in the contest, just one shy of their season high.
Andy Seaman (1-1) took the loss for Army. He was charged with all of the Red Foxes' runs in their four-run fourth, and he retired just one batter. Right fielder Cole White had two hits and an RBI for the Black Knights, who fell to 21-22.
Marist improved to 18-20 on the season. The Red Foxes will return to action this weekend with a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series against Manhattan at McCann Baseball Field. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday, followed by a single game at noon on Sunday. All of the action can be heard live on GoRedFoxes.com.
