LOBOS FACE TOUGH TASK, TAKE ON No. 5 ARIZONA: The New Mexico baseball team (19-18) will look to extend its three-game winning streak against No. 5 Arizona Tuesday, April 19 at Isotopes Park beginning at 6 p.m. Please note that the original start time was 5 p.m. Gametracker and a live audio broadcast will be available at GoLobos.com.

UNM grounded Air Force by taking all three games last weekend at Isotopes Park. New Mexico, which has now won 16 in a row over the Academy, topped the Falcons 7-4 in the series opener on Friday and took both games of a doubleheader on Sunday, 18-7 and 12-6. The Lobos improved to 9-6 in Mountain West play and currently sit in third place in the league standings, three games behind BYU (12-3).

After getting swept by the Wildcats in the season opener Feb. 4-6 in Tucson, the Lobos will have one more chance in 2005 at ending Arizona's 22-game winning streak over UNM. The Lobos last defeated Arizona on Jan. 31, 1997 with a 7-3 win in 11 innings.

Jay Russell had four hits in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against Air Force.

Ending the streak will be difficult, however, as Arizona enters Albuquerque with a 26-11 record. The Wildcats lead the Pac-10 with a 10-2 league mark after taking two of three games over then-No. 11 Oregon State last weekend in Tucson. The fifth-ranked Wildcats are the highest-ranked team New Mexico has played since it took on No. 2 Rice in the WAC Tournament on May 19, 1999.

This marks the first time the Lobos and Wildcats have met in Albuquerque since U of A swept a three-game series back in April of 1978 at Lobo Field, a span of 47 games.

NOTES FROM THE FIRST ARIZONA SERIES

• No. 12 Arizona swept New Mexico, 9-0, 14-5, and 15-6, in the first series of the season Feb. 4-6 in Tucson

• Wildcat junior John Meloan allowed just one hit in 7.2 innings of action in the opener, striking out a career-high 12 batters...he didn't allow a hit until Ryan Barba lashed a single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning...for his efforts, he was named the National Collegiate Pitcher of the Week.

• Arizona was equally as dominant in the second game, as the staff fanned 18 Lobos...for the series, UNM struck out 42 times.

• The Wildcats scored 38 hits and collected 49 hits in the series as they extended their winning streak to 22 games over the Lobos.

Garrick Haymore led the Lobos at the plate, going 3-for-7 with two doubles and two runs.

• In his first career start, freshman Ian Hollick went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Sunday's finale.

GET OUT THOSE BINOCULARS - LOBOS TO WATCH

• Sophomore first baseman Daniel Stovall is looking to top his sensational freshman campaign that landed him spots on the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America and All-Mountain West teams. He is currently one of 126 players on the Wallace Watch Award list, which is given out to college baseball's top player. He was also named Baseball America's preseason Mountain West Player of the Year. Stovall hit .347 with 12 homers, 14 doubles and 34 RBI last year. Stovall is certainly avoiding the sophomore jinx, as he's improving in every offensive category this season - he's batting .385 with six homers, 43 RBI and 13 doubles.

• Freshman Jordan Pacheco, who led Albuquerque's La Cueva High School to back-to-back state championships, is making a nice transition to Division I collegiate baseball. The second baseman leads the Mountain West in batting (.414) and hits (63). He also ranks among the Mountain West leaders in slugging (.711), on-base percentage (.461), runs (42), homers (eight) and triples (four). Pacheco had a 19-game hitting streak earlier this season. Last week, he hit .529 (9-for-17) with seven runs, three doubles a homer and six RBI.

• Sophomore DH/outfielder Chris Carlson is one of the top sluggers in the Mountain West - he leads the league in runs (45), doubles (15), walks (28). He also ranks among the top five in the MWC in RBI (45), slugging (.694) and on-base percentage (.471), while batting .366 with seven homers.

• Senior outfielder Garrick Haymore is second on the team with a .391 batting average and is fifth in the Mountain West with a .444 average in conference games. He hit three triples against Air Force - he leads the league and is ranked among the top-five in the nation with nine for the season - and hit .529 (9-for17) with eight RBI in four games last week.

• Catcher Jeff Grady leads the team with nine dingers, including a monster grand slam that hit the top of the scoreboard in left-center field at Isotopes Park March 25 vs. UNLV. Grady has hit the scoreboard twice this season and has also hit two grand slams. He collected his second multi-homer game of the season April 17 vs. Air Force.

• Freshman Ian Hollick played his way into the lineup earlier in the season, and is now the starting third baseman for the Lobos. Hollick is batting .355 with three triples, two homers and 18 RBI.

• Centerfielder Matt Foote led the Lobos with a .533 batting average last week (8-for-15) with six runs, a triple, a homer and three RBI.

DON'T LEAVE FOR THE BALLPARK WITHOUT THEM - CAN'T MISS NOTES

• The Lobos claimed their 1400th win in program history with their 11-6 win March 4 vs. Northern Colorado. UNM is 1414-1294-14 (.522) all-time in its history.

• Coach Alday, already the winningest coach in New Mexico history, is four wins shy of claiming his 950th career victory. He won his 450th game at New Mexico on April 17 in the second game of a doubleheader against Air Force. Alday is 946-660-3 all-time, and 450-440-3 at UNM.

• The Lobos are 15-7 at home this season at Isotopes Park....UNM is 29-21-1 all-time at The Lab.

• UNM tied an NCAA record with 11 consecutive hits in the second inning of the March 11 game against Savannah State, a 20-7 win...16 consecutive Lobos reached base to start the inning, four shy of tying another NCAA mark...all in all, the Lobos scored 15 runs and collected 13 hits in the inning.

• Get out the brooms - the Lobos have five three-game series sweeps this season (New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Savannah State, Utah, Air Force), the most since the 2000 season, when the regular season champs got out the brooms six times.

LOBOS 7-3 IN LAST 10 GAMES

New Mexico is 7-3 in its last 10 games, including two series sweeps over Utah and Air Force. UNM is outhitting its opponents .334 to .304 during that span, and have hit seven more homers (14-7) and scored 17 more runs (88-71).
