Bulldogs Record 18 hits In 15-3 Victory

Zags score 15 runs in opening five frames

Spokane, Wash. - Seven Gonzaga University batters recorded multiple hits as the Bulldogs exploded for 18 hits to down visiting University of Washington 15-3 Monday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane. Jason Chatwood and Mark Castellitto led the brigade, recording three hits a piece.

Gonzaga (19-16, 2-6 WCC) starter Reedy Berg (2-2) earned the victory as the freshman allowed three runs on six his while striking out eight over 6.0 innings pitched. Reliever Andrew Danner earned his first career save as the rookie pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to end the game. UW (23-11) starter Geoff Brown (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowin seven runs on eight hits in over 2.1 innings of work.

Washington opened scoring in the opening frame thanks to a two-run home run by Kyle Conley. The Zags responded by scoring multiple runs in each of the opening five innings. The Bulldogs posted two in the first, three in the second, two in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth.

In the Bulldogs' half of the first, Gonzaga combined three hits and a walk to post two runs. Ryan Wiegand and Mark Castellitto drove in runs during the frame on a single to right and a sacrifice fly, respectively.

GU added three more runs in the second frame as Bryan Winston, Evan Wells and Marcus McKimmy came around to score. Winston led off the frame with a single before scoring on a base hit by Chatwood. Wells was plated on a double by McKimmy, who was brought home on an infield single by Tyson Van Winkle.

 

 

Wells and Chatwood drove in runs in the third, extending the Zag's lead to 7-2. Wells drove in Grant Kveder on a fielder's choice for the first inning run, before McKimmy singled through the left side, plating Winston.

Gonzaga sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, adding five runs on six hits and a bases loaded walk. Highlighting the frame was a two-run homer by Castellitto for his sixth long ball of the season.

The Zags posted their final three runs in the bottom of the fifth as they capitalized on three hits and two costly UW fielding errors. Chatwood drove in the first two runs of the frame with a bases loaded single up the middle before Drew Heid could score the third run on an error.

Washington added its third run of the contest in the top of the sixth as pinch hitter Julien Pollard doubled down the left field line scoring Ty Rasmussen.

Gonzaga used 20 different players in the game, allowing for nine Bulldog batters to record hits. Seven Zags scored in the contest, headlined by four runs scored by Winston. Six GU batters drove in runs on the evening, with Chatwood plating four and Wells and Castellitto each driving in two.

The Bulldogs and Huskies will resume the two-game series Tuesday afternoon. The first pitch at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field is slated for 3 p.m.
