CLEVELAND, Ohio - After posting the game-winning hit in the Vikings' only game last week sophomore Matt Madrid was named Horizon League Athlete of the Week after. The honor is the first of Madrid's career. The league office made the announcement on Monday (April 9).

Madrid keyed CSU's 14-11 home opener win over Kent State on April 3 with a 3-for-4 performance that included the go-ahead three-run double in the eighth inning and a solo home run in the third. The Youngstown, Ohio native also stole two bases and singled in the win, Cleveland State's first contest at Pipe Yard Stadium in Lorain, Ohio.

"Matt has been playing very well lately and is well-deserving of this award," head coach Kevin Kocks said. "He has really been swing the bat well in the last few games."

Madrid, who has raised his batting average 36 points with seven hits in his last five games, leads the Vikings with two home runs and is second on the team with 12 RBI. He has started all of CSU's 26 games this season at second base.

After having four of their five games cancelled last week due to snow, the Vikings return to action with a doubleheader at Youngstown State on Tuesday (April 10) at 3:00 p.m. CSU will then travel to Niagara for a 3:00 p.m. contest the next day.
